Ato Wondwessen Assefa, is a graduate of The University of Manchester, United Kingdom with M.Sc. Degree in International Development: Development Finance (2005) and B.A. Degree in Economics (1996) from Addis Ababa University. He has also attended various trainings locally and abroad.

Ato Wondwessen Assefa started his banking career in Commercial Bank of Ethiopia and worked there for 14 years in different capacities including Chairman, Business & Corporate Credit Committee, Manager, Credit Portfolio Management & Policy Development, Senior Credit Analyst, Senior Project Analyst, and other jobs in different works units. As Chairman, Business & Corporate Credit Committee, he chaired the highest level credit committee of the bank for more than three years. Further, he had been a member of Board of Directors of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia for 3 years and served as a trainer internally and with Ethiopian Institute of Financial Studies (EIFS) for various training courses. Apart from his banking career, he had served as Deputy General Manager Tri Continental Ltd (U.K.), Ethiopia Office where he managed the provision of multi-million dollar IT solutions and training for banks and corporate entities. He had also served as Senior Business Consultant in Temenos-Banking Software System.

Ato Wondwessen joined Addis International Bank S.C. in November 2018 from Tri Continental Ltd (U.K.).
